EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN N.J. COURTS
We’ve met with many people from Atlantic City, Egg Harbor, Pleasantville, Galloway, Hamilton, and the other townships, cities, and boroughs of Atlantic County who are facing their first encounter with the N.J. courts. That is why we take the time to explain to prospective clients how the New Jersey criminal court system works. Competent representation is crucial because prosecutors do everything the system allows in seeking a guilty verdict.
Our Atlantic County criminal defense attorneys understand well the charges our clients face because our work is based on our lawyers’ combined 100 years of legal experience representing people throughout New Jersey. We know when and how to work with prosecutors, who in many instances can downgrade charges or recommend lighter sentences, especially for first-time offenders or someone who deserves help such as drug treatment rather than other punishment.
What’s more, Atlantic County prosecutors know our attorneys and our law firm, so they understand our intentions and consider our proposals for alternative charges, sentencing, or diversion. They have seen our attorneys at work in Atlantic County and its municipalities, as well as other New Jersey courtrooms.
As your defense attorneys in Atlantic County, we make obtaining your best available outcome our top priority. We will make sure that you understand your case’s status at every step and any long-term considerations as we craft your defense strategy. Plus, we will help you weigh the pros and cons, if appropriate, of a plea bargain and programs such as Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI), Conditional Discharge probation, or Drug Court.
WE ARE ATLANTIC COUNTY DEFENSE ATTORNEYS
The respected attorneys at the Law Offices of Jonathan F. Marshall are proud to serve residents of Atlantic County who need representation against a wide range of criminal charges. Minor legal violations in New Jersey are called “disorderly persons offenses” or “petty disorderly persons offenses” and are heard by municipal court judges. More serious charges, called “indicatable offenses,” are heard in the local county superior court. Federal cases are handled in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark, Trenton, and Camden.
ATLANTIC COUNTY COURTS
Atlantic County is the third largest of New Jersey’s counties, behind Ocean County and Burlington County. It has more than 20 municipalities, and its county seat is Mays Landing.
New Jersey’s municipal courts handle municipal ordinance offenses, motor vehicle and parking tickets, certain regulatory body offenses, and minor criminal charges. Serious criminal cases, such as auto theft, assault, or robbery, may be filed initially in municipal court but will be transferred to superior court.
