Minor legal violations are known as “disorderly persons offenses” or “petty disorderly persons offenses” in New Jersey and are handled by municipal courts. The local county’s superior court takes care of more serious charges, or “indictable offenses.” The United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, is the court that comes into play when someone is charged with federal law or commits an offense on property owned by the government. The District Courts are located in Trenton, Camden and Newark, hears federal cases.

GLOUCESTER COUNTY COURTS

Defendants in New Jersey tend to appear before judges in municipal courts where their charges originate, even for more serious offenses such as assault, auto theft, or robbery. However, those cases are transferred to superior court. The municipal courts have limited jurisdiction and handle minor criminal offenses, as well as municipal ordinance violations and motor vehicle and parking tickets.
